Up close: Nursing training at the district clinic
An educational and varied nursing education that is fun – this is what it takes to get young people excited about nursing. But how does the nursing training at the district clinic work? Which tasks are waiting for trainees, who is at their side with help and advice? Katja Gomez Bermejo is part of the team of freelance practice managers at the district clinic and outlines the everyday life of nursing trainees:
6:00 a.m.: Handover from night to early service. All the staff of the ward meet and discuss the night, the situation of the patients and upcoming tasks. Involved: And, of course, the trainees. They clarify who they accompany in the shift and which patients they take care of.
Then it starts: The daily routine includes, for example, the basic care of the patients, i.e. the taking over of the body care or the help with it, as well as the dressing and undressing or the food supply. Together with a nurse, drugs are distributed and administered, patients must be prepared for surgery or examinations. Vital sign control is also one of the tasks of prospective nurses.
What should not be missed in between are the breaks – of course in consultation with the other colleagues, because contact persons for patients should not be missing at any time.
At 1:15 p.m., the late service for the next handover comes to the station. It is clear that: There is no day like the other. Between 6:00 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., the trainees experience the full range of everyday hospital life:
In addition to three optional practice managers, the station's own ones are always at your side. Together, the team currently takes care of five in-house and other external trainees, imparts practical knowledge and helpful tricks. It is important to always be accessible to trainees, because they should feel in good hands in the new training situation.
Practice instructions are also part of everyday trainee life. They prepare for the exam and offer room for further examinations. A practice manager accompanies a trainee for a few hours on duty. First, however, the trainee obtains the consent of a patient room and a main patient the day before, in which he is allowed to carry out his practice instructions. The trainees also learn to describe the social history, i.e. the social and family background of a patient, because all this is relevant for the best possible care of a patient. In addition, there are various practical and documenting activities that prepare not only for the final exams, but also for the later day-to-day care. In this way, our trainees manage to link theory and practice even better and to deepen what they have learned.
For many, a special experience is the emergency ambulance. Practice manager Christian Lücker is also responsible for the emergency management of the district clinic and can provide the nursing trainees with in-depth insights into the area. Even practical instructions in the emergency ambulance are possible – a real special feature of the district clinic.
