Surgery

Saed Thaher is Chief Physician for the Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery Section. In the interview, he explains myths about artificial joint replacement, makes the various procedures of the procedure transparent and shows when and why the therapy approach can be the right way.

Pain and wear – whether back, knees or hips, the joints also increase with age. Mr. Thaher, do you always have to use a new joint?

Saed Thaher: ‘No, that is a common misconception. In fact, artificial joint replacement is the last treatment option and should normally only be performed when other treatment options have been exhausted. This may be the case, for example, if physiotherapy or other conservative methods do not improve for months. Or even if the quality of life suffers so badly that even everyday life can hardly be coped with. Then the operational pathway is a good and proven way to improve quality of life and mobility.”

Slightly more specific: What does this improvement look like?

Saed Thaher: "There are many scientific studies and studies on this topic. These show that the vast majority of patients benefit greatly from joint replacement and that the artificial joints or joint parts are still fully functional after fifteen, sometimes even twenty years. Pain is much less frequent and even sporting activities become possible again for many.”

Joint replacement surgery is one of the most common operations in Germany. Is the surgery a pure routine?

Saed Thaher: "I wouldn't call it that. It is true that the type of procedure is now part of everyday surgery. I work in a highly professional and experienced team, I have been implanting prostheses for years. Despite my many years of experience, I attach great importance to treating every procedure with due respect, because in the end every person, every joint and every procedure is unique and deserves individual consideration.”

With a joint replacement, most probably think directly of knee or hip joints. Why is that so?

Saed Thaher: ‘Knee and hip joints are not only among the most complex joints of our body, they are also sometimes exposed to the most severe stress throughout our lives. The hip joints are ball joints held by bones and guided by ligaments – they need to be well balanced for our upright gait. Misalignments when walking or too one-sided movements (such as sitting for a long time) make the poison here over the duration.

The knee is even more complicated: Ligaments, muscles, tendons, capsule structures and menisci make up the course of movement. This multi-layered structure makes the knee vulnerable, especially ligaments and menisci are weak points that are heavily stressed in various sports. But many craft professions are also characterized by movements that cause joints to wear out quickly.

These factors are responsible for the fact that joint replacement is so common in the hips and knees. Only with a clear distance then come ankles or shoulders. In principle, however, it is possible to artificially replace any joint of our body.”

An artificial joint is a change for the body. How do patients get back on their feet after surgery?

Saed Thaher: “The holistic view of our patients is important for the long-term success of the procedure. An artificial joint alone is only half the battle. The psyche, the musculoskeletal system, the health condition and last but not least the nutrition contribute to the success. Especially in orthopedics, we benefit from the overarching cooperation of experts from our intersectoral center. For example, our social service organises rehabilitation even before the operation. It is my ambition and the ambition of the whole team that our patients get to know us in face-to-face conversations and feel good and safe with every step of the therapy.”

Thank you for the interview!

Interview with Saed ThaherInterview with Saed Thaher Interview with Saed Thaher, Chief Physician Section Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery Saed Thaher is Chief Physician for the Section Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery.
