\u2018In open MRI, more comfort also means better diagnostics\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just over two months after commissioning of the new open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner at the Gro\u00df-Gerau district hospital: We meet Dr. Udo Raab, Section Head of Radiology at the Kreisklinik, and Ahmad Abusaman, Senior Physician of Radiology, and talk about their first experiences, which advantages of the device have noticeably changed the patient's everyday life and which projects radiology still strives for.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr Raab, Mr Abusaman: About nine weeks ago, the open MRI went into operation at the district clinic \u2013 the first model of its kind in Europe. What has changed for your patients since then?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Udo Raab:<\/p>\n

Our patients benefit directly from the new open MRI: The model is open at 270 degrees, which fundamentally changes the course of our investigations. In the appointment, patients are much more relaxed because they can look at the room from the MRI during the examination or an accompanying person holds their hand \u2013 this means a lot, especially for the elderly.<\/p>\n

Ahmad Abusaman:<\/p>\n

The scenery itself is also great \u2013 dimmed light, large landscapes, bright and friendly atmosphere: This simply makes a big difference for patients in an already stressful treatment situation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Can you take a step forward medically with the open MRI in addition to more comfort?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Udo Raab:<\/p>\n

These two factors are closely linked: In open MRI, more comfort also means better diagnostics. An example: In the past, patients were often frightened when examined in the \u2018tube\u2019. This not only delayed our processes (which sometimes led to a long wait for the follow-up investigations), but also caused bad pictures. Patients are calmer without fear and stress, which also increases the quality of our pictures noticeably. In this way, we are making great medical progress, especially as a basic provider in rural areas. In addition, the strength of the magnet (1.2 Tesla) of the open MRI allows us to perform rapid investigations with the highest image quality.<\/p>\n

Ahmad Abusaman:<\/p>\n

In addition to medical gains, we as practitioners also have inclusion issues in mind: How do we also enable anxiety patients to receive treatment that meets state-of-the-art technological standards? What will change for people with reduced mobility? Dementia-sensitive examinations are also important to us. Especially for us as a clinic, as we are focused on the radiological care of inpatients, it is important that patients feel comfortable \u2013 this supports the healing process from a medical point of view.<\/p>\n

Surprising that you, of all people, as a small house can now make this offer to patients. <\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Udo Raab:<\/p>\n

All the more we are happy about it! Highly professional and modern diagnostics should not only be reserved for people in metropolitan areas and large cities. This is because: Only through good diagnostics can we develop a suitable therapeutic approach.<\/p>\n

What changes for you personally as a doctor?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ahmad Abusaman:<\/p>\n

Here, too, we are taking a big step forward. Since our patients are calmer during the examination, we have to cancel fewer procedures without result. This not only makes us faster, but also allows us a more comprehensive treatment. Our aim is always to provide the best possible care to the patient \u2013 this is what we do.<\/p>\n

Has your number of patients changed since the open MRI was started?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Udo Raab:<\/p>\n

Of course, open MRI is primarily available to our inpatients. We are a hospital and fulfill our care mandate. In addition, we are increasingly receiving inquiries from outpatients. They then regularly cover the costs themselves, because although health insurance companies are increasingly taking over outpatient examinations in open MRI, these are not yet considered the norm. We are pleased that we can give a perspective to many people who avoid treatment in the classic tube. At the same time, we hope that the open MRI will continue to prevail and that health insurance companies will cover the examination for outpatients in principle.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Away from open MRI: How does your section look to the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ahmad Abusaman:<\/p>\n

We are a young, welded and technology-savvy team. This is important because: Radiology \u2013 whether X-ray, CT or MRI \u2013 always has a very technological component. In addition, we work interdisciplinary and closely with the other sections of the district clinic: Our diagnosis can be the basis for further treatment in the house or supplement it with precise visual material. And: Both of us are also pain medicine practitioners \u2013 we offer appropriate therapies. In this way, our patients receive treatment from a single source. Last but not least, we will soon be able to further modernize ourselves with two new X-ray machines. This also benefits our patients.<\/p>\n
